HUMAN SETTLEMENT & MANAGEMENT INSTITUTE (HSMI)

HSMI was established in 1985 as the research and training wing of the Corporation.  In order to provide training support for professionals and a forum for interaction of administrators, professionals, researchers and others engaged with the issues and day to day practice of human settlement development.  While strengthening the borrowing agencies through training, HSMI helps in generating viable projects to improve HUDCO’s own lending operations directly and indirectly.  This gives the institute a rare twin character of an R&T Wing for internal capacity building while also operating as a sector specialist institute.

The main objectives with which the Institute was set up were:

· To provide professional development programmes in the form of workshops, seminars, courses and creative interaction encounters for personnel of various human settlement agencies;
· To identify training needs at managerial, professional and technical levels within housing and infrastructure agencies, urban development authorities and other local bodies;
· To develop curricula, training modules, manuals, audio-visual teaching aids and case studies;
· To provide technical and research support to housing and human settlement agencies including support for setting up of pilot and demonstration projects;
· To promote in-house and contract research and to develop methodologies for shelter neighbourhood and urban  analysis and project / policy impact assessment;
· To act as a resource center (library, documentation, audio-visuals) for HUDCO, its clients and other institutions in the field; and
· To promote excellence in the field of human settlements by offering chairs and fellowships to professionals of outstanding merit and reputation.
